andrew niccol tells us in the film that we are more than our genetic inheritance this is reflected in the tagline :there is no gene for human spirit  and developed through human characters

jerome morrow is represented to us as being genetically perfect

however without a dream for the future he does not have a reason to live  until he allies himself to vincent freeman, a “de-gnen-rate” and  his plan to trick the space mission called gattaca into accepting him him on a mission reserved for only the very best.
